Training

Some interestings tidbits about training Modern Arnis at the HMAC:

  • We train both the right and left hand usage of weapons and applications of techniques.
  • We train from all ranges: long/weapons-only range, middle range (punchs, kicks, parries), and close range (locks, throws, traps, knees, elbows), and groundfighting/grappling.
  • We train to move into and out of the various ranges.
  • Many techniques learned apply equally well when done with a stick, knife, or empty-handed.
  • Weapons are introduced to students from the onset.
  • We blend in elements from a variety of other martial arts, including but not limited to: Renegade Jeet Kune Do, Aikido, Pencak Silat Mande Muda, Wing Chun, and Bando.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is a typical class like?
A: Generally: At the start of class the students line up and bow in to the instructor. Approximately 10-15 minutes is spent in guided stretches and warm-ups. Then the instructor selects a student upon whom is demonstrated a particular technique. The technique may be a drill (in whole or in part) or sequence involving one stick, two sticks, a knife, a knife and stick, two knives, a staff, or empty hands. After a few demos, students pair off and practice the technique while the instructor goes from pair to pair answering any questions, refining movements, and making suggestions. After the technique has been sufficiently practiced, everyone bows to their partners and lines up again for another move to be demonstrated.

The class proceeds in this fashion, usually with the techniques building upon, or related to, earlier techniques. The additional techniques may add or remove use of one or more weapon. Students informally rotate partners to work with others of different skill levels and body types.

A five minute break occurs roughly midway through class. At the end of class we circle up, discuss any news or updates pertaining to the school, and then bow out.

Q: How long before I am able to train with weapons?
A: Weapons are an integral part of Modern Arnis, and as such, unlike many other martial arts, all students begin training with weapons right off the bat. What we train changes on a per-class basis, so you may or may not actually use weapons your first day. But odds are good you’ll have a knife or stick(s) in your hands that day! Check out our weapons page to learn more about the weapons you’ll be using.
Q: Do I have have to purchase weapons for use in class?
A: We have each type of weapon available for borrow during class. However, we do recommend that if you are planning on continuing your training in Modern Arnis longer than a few classes that you purchase at least a pair of sticks. This will allow you to practice and gain comfort/familiarity with the weapons at home. Weapons and other training gear are available for purchase from the HMAC store.
Q: Do we actually train with live/sharp knives?!
A: Due to obvious safety issues, we do not actually use knives with sharp blades or tips. Students have their choice of what sort of training knife to use; trainers come in aluminum, wood, or rubber.
Q: Do I have to wear a uniform to train in?
A: Officially our uniform consists of black martial arts pants with dual red-stripes on the outside of each pant leg, and a predominately black T-shirt. We also have a black jacket for especially formal occasions. In general though, we recommend you wear comfortable pants (e.g. sweats) and a T-shirt. Socks are optional; but no shoes on the mat. And while we have a ranking system denoted with belts, wearing belts is optional.
